Outfitting a studio, office, or hospitality space with acoustic treatment involves five product classes that barely resemble each other commercially — one is sold by the piece at $0.25, another by the square meter at $20, and a third is quoted per roll. Our October 2026 sampling across all five classes in the acoustic category produces two lessons: the price ladder is steep but logical, and unit discipline matters more in this category than in any other we track.
Price data source: publicly listed wholesale prices on mainstream B2B platforms, collected on 2026-10-18. These are reference ranges only — actual transaction prices vary significantly with order quantity and customization requirements. For full methodology, see Understanding Reference Prices.
The Five-Class Price Ladder
| Product Class | Reference Range | Unit | Band Logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| PU Egg-Crate Studio Foam | 0.25 – 2.00 | piece | Thin 25 mm untreated tiles at the floor; thicker flame-retardant studio grades at the top |
| Hexagonal PET Felt Tiles | 0.65 – 13.00 | piece | Small plain tiles at 500-piece MOQ; larger-format composite-faced tiles at the top |
| Mass-Loaded Vinyl Barriers | 2.50 – 10.00 | square meter | Lighter 1–2 mm grades; 3 mm+, self-adhesive, EPDM-based at the top |
| Melamine Acoustic Wedges | 8.00 – 14.00 | square meter | Fire-retardant architectural melamine, tight band at 500 m² tiers |
| Fabric-Wrapped Fiberglass Panels | 4.00 – 20.00 | square meter | High-MOQ commodity grades; low-MOQ fire-certified custom fabric builds at the top |
Lesson 1: Compare per Square Meter, Not per Listing
The single most common error in acoustic-material sourcing is comparing a per-piece tile price against a per-square-meter panel price. Our bands normalize the three board/panel classes to square meters:
- MLV barriers sit at $2.50–10/m², stepping with thickness and formulation — lighter 1–2 mm grades at $2.49–3.99 (at a 10 m² minimum), self-adhesive and EPDM-based 3 mm+ products toward $10.
- Melamine wedges run $8–14/m² — notably tight, because the architectural-grade product is spec-stable and trades at volume tiers (500 m²+ listings clustered at $7.89–13.75).
- Fabric-wrapped fiberglass spans $4–20/m²: commodity 200 m²阻燃 grades at $2.98–5.88, mid-tier at $5–15, and E0 fire-rated fabric builds at $19.7–25.7 — the last deliberately excluded from our band ceiling as a low-volume certified tier.
Against those, the per-piece products solve different problems: egg-crate foam at $0.25–2.00 per tile is a studio-bulk purchase (100-piece minimums), and PET hex tiles at $0.65–13.00 are a design-finish product where the composite-faced, larger-format versions command designer-tier pricing.
Lesson 2: Fire Certification Is the Hidden Price Line
Across every class, the same divider appears: untreated commodity stock versus flame-retardant-certified product. In egg-crate foam it separates $0.25 thin tiles from $2.00 FR studio grades (an 8× gap within one product page). In fiberglass panels it separates the $4 commodity end from the $20+ certified custom end. For commercial projects — offices, hospitality, anywhere a fire code applies — the certified tier is not an upgrade option; it is the product, and the band you should budget against.
Lesson 3: Keyword Pollution Is Real — and It Corrupts Benchmarks
One sampling note worth passing on: searching “melamine foam” on B2B platforms returns heavy contamination from household cleaning sponges (chemically related, commercially unrelated). Our band keeps only architectural acoustic-grade listings; if your own price checks return implausibly cheap “melamine” numbers, verify you are looking at building-acoustic product, not cleaning pads. The same unit-and-category discipline we applied is the discipline your RFQ should demand.
Budget Scenarios
- Home/project studio: egg-crate foam at volume ($0.25–0.66/tile zone) plus targeted melamine wedges; a treated room costs less than the microphone budget it protects.
- Commercial fit-out (office/hospitality): PET design tiles at $2.6–9 or fabric-wrapped fiberglass at $5–15/m², fire certification specified in the PO.
- Acoustic isolation (machinery, partition walls): MLV barriers at $3–6/m² for 1–2 mm grades; upgrade to 3 mm+ self-adhesive only where the mass-per-area spec demands it.
Caveats
All figures are ex-factory-style listing prices excluding shipping, duties, cutting/tooling for custom shapes, samples, and fire-certification testing. Foam and textile inputs move these bands within quarters — re-validate figures older than two quarters before anchoring a project budget.
