From $0.01 Bandages to $6.40 Nitrile Boxes: The Per-Unit Economics of Medical Consumables

Boxes of nitrile examination gloves, disposable isolation gowns, adhesive bandages, and bouffant caps arranged on a medical supply warehouse shelf

Medical consumables are the purest expression of a rule this series keeps returning to: at the commodity end of B2B, price is quantity. Nine products, every one of them priced per piece, per box, or per roll — and every band in our October 2026 sampling is a quantity-and-certification story before it is a product story.

Price data source: publicly listed wholesale prices on mainstream B2B platforms, collected on 2026-10-19. These are reference ranges only — actual transaction prices vary significantly with order quantity and customization requirements. For full methodology, see Understanding Reference Prices.

Lesson 1: Normalize the Unit Before Anything Else

Gloves demonstrated the trap most clearly: the same category lists per piece ($0.01–0.08), per box ($1.10–6.40), and per pair (sterile surgical grades) — sometimes on adjacent listings. Our bands standardize to the B2B medical channel convention: boxes of 100 for exam gloves, rolls for bandages, pieces for everything else. A quote comparison that skips this step is comparing three different products and calling it a market price.

Lesson 2: Gram Weight and Certification Are the Price Dials

Inside each band, the divider is physical spec plus paperwork:

  • Gowns: 18–40 gsm volume tiers ran $0.10–0.30 at five-to-ten-thousand-unit MOQs; 45 gsm SMS medical-grade sat at $0.28–0.48.
  • Caps: 10–14 gsm PP clip caps at $0.01–0.02 in volume; double-elastic SMS toward $0.08.
  • Gloves: the latex band ($1.10–3.00/box) sits below nitrile ($1.70–6.40/box) — material cost plus the certification tier you specify. “Medical-grade certified” at small lots is what lives at the top of the nitrile band; container volume is what lives at the bottom.
  • Bandages: the 20× spread inside adhesive bandages is a product-family spread — commodity PE strips at $0.007–0.06 versus hydrocolloid and sterile waterproof dressings at $0.20.

For procurement: write gsm, material, and certification level into the RFQ. Without them, “gown” and “gown” can differ by 4× and both quotes are honest.

Lesson 3: This Is Our Most Date-Sensitive Category

Medical consumables carry a specific benchmarking hazard our sampling surfaced directly: stale pandemic-era listings. We rejected glove quotes at $0.26–0.30 per piece explicitly because they dated from 2020 — a different market world. In this category, a listing’s price_as_of matters more than its position in search results. Check the date before you check the price; treat anything older than a few quarters as historical curiosity, not market signal.

Red Flags From the Sampling Floor

  • Retail leakage: consumer boxes at $6.55–16.50 belong on pharmacy shelves, not in your benchmark set.
  • Sterile/surgical conflation: sterile surgical gloves priced per pair are a different product from the exam-grade boxes in our bands — same glove aisle, different spec universe.
  • Sample fees as prices: a $32 “bandage listing” was a sample charge. In a category where real unit prices run to hundredths of a dollar, sample fees are a permanent source of false anchors.

Buying by Program Type

  • Veterinary / athletic / tattoo supply: cohesive bandages and nitrile at volume tiers; certification burden is light and the $1.70–2.90/box zone is your benchmark.
  • Clinic and dental distributors: exam gloves at $2.60–3.00/box and gowns at 45 gsm SMS; certification documentation is your brand protection.
  • Hospital-group tenders: the full certified tier across all nine products — and the volumes that justify container-level pricing. Build re-validation into the tender cycle; these bands move with polymer and nonwoven input costs.

Caveats

All figures are ex-factory-style listing prices excluding shipping, duties, sterilization validation, samples, and regulatory certification fees. This category’s bands are among the quickest to move in our dataset — re-validate quarterly, and always per spec sheet.
