Product Overview
Magnesia-carbon brick combines two materials that are individually weak and jointly dominant in steel service: fused or sintered magnesia provides refractoriness and slag resistance, while graphite blocks slag wetting and gives the brick exceptional thermal-shock behavior in cycling ladle duty. Typical compositions run 70–95% MgO with 8–20% graphite, pressed with a phenolic resin bond and antioxidant additives such as aluminum, silicon, silicon carbide or boron carbide that protect the carbon during service. Because graphite oxidizes in air above roughly 1600°C, brick selection and slag-line zoning must balance corrosion resistance against carbon loss. Manufacturers listed here press standard straights and ladle-tailored shapes (slag-line, barrel, bottom impact pads), with compositions matched to ladle metallurgy — basic slag, high FeO campaigns and calcium-treated steels each drive different MgO purity and graphite levels.
